I hate to sound like an ultraconsumer but...

...why cant somebody invent a floor to ceiling refrigerator???!

Dont laugh, I have thought this through. I hope someone on this board likes my idea and runs with it (and it is only fair I get a discount on it).

refrigerators are lovely. They do wonderful things and American kitchens all have them.

But they are fat. They are big, bulky and jut into the middle of the kitchen.

Why has a floor to ceiling one not been invented? Take the extra 2-3 inches that juts out of the front and add it to the top. I know they make counter-depth ones now- but they dont seem to add the loss inches to the top! So you are left with a shorter/thinner fridge that is aestetically pleasing but holds less items.

Now to answer your questions:
"But Gamecock...no one can reach so high up beyond the 6 ft they make fridges now-it is all wasted space." -No its not!! They make cabinets that go above refridgerators and nobody can reach those! People can store excess items such as frozen meat/water bottles/whatever up there. Besides that, why do they make extra long cabinets that go up to the ceiling if no one can reach?- Because humans are resourcesful and will never turn away storage space! I dont mind getting out a stool- I do mind a huge refridgerator that takes up 5-6 inches of floor space beyond the counters. They can even add in a little stool that pulls out for people to step on to reach the upper limits of the fridge.

"But Gamecock- people dont need so much storage space." ....my inlaws have 4 (4!!) refrigerator/or freezers in their home. People need the extra space.

If it gets built- people will buy it.

I WANT it!

I'm sure you are right...there is most likely a market for it. Have you contacted GE or other manufacturer about your idea?

Hmm, "rich people" have walk-in refrigerators and freezers. And if you're Tim Allen, you'd also have a butcher standing right inside, ready to take your order. Big Grin

But seriously though, a walk-in refrigerator would be floor to ceiling. Usually, only restaurants have those (even small ones), but a lot of "rich people houses" do too.

I did a quick check of prices, and they can be had for about $3k to $5k. That's before installation and potential remodeling though.

Today's refrigerators are gigantic, yet you are right, they are always fat as can be, never tall and slim. My kitchen is 99 years old and cannot accommodate the modern behemoth. The tall and slim dimensions would work. Actually, I'd go for just slim and average-to-short height...Funny how in the days when families were bigger, fridges were smaller. Now, fewer people really cook, families are smaller, yet some kitchens have refrigerators that look like they belong in a restaurant.

Something else. I vaguely remember reading something about refrigerator designs once (yes, refrigerator designs). The ideal design is a top-down design where the freezer is located on the bottom. Make sense, right? The coolest spot is on the bottom of any refrigerator.

However, most people have side-to-side designs, where the freezer is on the left side of the refrigerator section. Why is that?

Top down designs don't typically sell well because a lot of consumers found it inconvenient to bend down every time they want to reach for something that's frozen.

Maybe this is an issue mostly for older people with bad backs, but the point is, there's a reason why most refrigerators are only a certain height, because beyond that, while it would make more design and engineering sense, people just find it inconvenient to reach....

Anyway, just food for thought. *drum roll* Big Grin

My husband always builds the cabinets around the appliances so that nothing ever sticks out!

AS and I were just complaining today that we wish our toilet were flush (pun) against the wall! We don't need the space behind the toilet, and all it does is accumulate dust and make it so you have to kneel over the toilet (psychologically gross) and reach around it to try and clean it.

They probably do make toilets that do that, but complaining is so much easier than doing research! Smile

How about making a pull out step - I can see it. The outer rack to pull out and an inner step to pull down which fits inside the rim of the pull out when folded up. Simple.

I would buy a taller fridge! At 6 ft tall with a big family a taller slimmer fridge would rock.

And I have a freezer on the bottom btw.

I bet it would be a big seller in cities with small apartments like New York and San Francisco!

I can just imagine the contractors of homes, apartments and condos and homeowners just breathe out a heavy sigh of what they need to do to their kitchen to accommodate these fridges. I do personally think it is a good idea but if it is too tall, it may not be as easily transportable.

ceejay, they make toilets where the cistern is inside the wall, is that what you are referring to?

we have a freezer-on-the-bottom refridgerator, it is quite fat, but the alcove where it fits has also been built pretty wide so i guess that solves the problem for us.
