I tipped 60% but I UNDERTIPPED last night

August 2nd, 2009 at 01:45 pm

I am still new to the city and trying to meet people here. I "know" several people here, but don't know their phone numbers or anything. I am trying to integrate myself into groups and last night I was invited to a bar that was hosting a special event by the family that owns the bar (They are my age).
Since I went by myself I didn't feel comfortable drinking very much but I had 3 beers and 2 glasses of water. I stayed for about 3 hrs and feel like I made a lot of headway getting to know the family/staff and their friends.

So when I closed out my tab I tipped generously (about 60%) and walked out.

On my way to my car it occurred to me that I had a very inexpensive night. I pulled out my receipt and realized they only charged me for 2 beers rather than 3. I guess their gift/discount to me. But I tipped according to the price.

So essentially the bill was $6.00 and change and I tipped $4.00 creating a total of $10.00 and change.

But the bill SHOULD have been about $9.00 because I had 3 beers, not 2. So my tip covered the free beer but nothing else.

So I undertipped. And I want these people to like me and be my friend.

I feel really bad. What should I do?

Well, you made an honest mistake. You did not do it intentionally. I would guess it won't ruin the relationship. If it does, what does that say about them? Just tip correctly the next time!!

Don't sweat it. They either gave you a free round or made a mistake on your tab -- either way, they would expect the tip to be based on the receipt total as well. They're unlikely to remember this one transaction and notice the difference. Just go back and visit again soon and enjoy the developing friendship.

I don't think I'd worry about it too much, and I really doubt they are sitting around thinking and discussing whether or not to be your friend over a beer. More than likely, it was an "on the house" gift to you, and they expected nothing monetary in return. I think you did just fine!

I think it's good you tipped 60%. LOL. MEaning, they probably won't notice since you were overly generous to begin with. Wink
I wouldn't worry about it either.

You tipped on the bill you received. There is no need for you to overthink it/worry about it.

That is better than what I saw on Friday. I was out for lunch with my mom. A guy at a neighboring table ordered a coney dog (hot dog w/chili, mustard and onions) and a glass of water. The water is/was free, the coney was on special for $.99 The man left a $.25 tip! Serioiusly. WTF??? I realize that technically it is/was a 25% tip. However, the regular price of the coney is $2.49, he saved $1.50 on that alone and this douchebag couldn't leave a $1 tip??? I am all for frugality, but, that is flat-out being a cheap@$$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

25-30 years ago, while still in HIGH SCHOOL, my one sister and I would frequent a local restaurant where we would each order a coke and split an order of fries. The bill was usually about $3. My sister and I would leave at least a $1, sometimes more. @@

Um. You had 3 beers and drove home? Could have cost you a lot more. Be thankful. Wink
Seriously though... You had no idea, very unintentional. Next time you go, leave a bit bigger tip! Big Grin

I wouldn't worry about it. I think they'll still be your friends.

I wouldn't sweat the tip, but I am showing my age (25 yrs out of college) and my lack of alcohol conditioning ... 3 beers/3 hours is a lot of drinking for me. Big Grin

3 beers in 3 hrs might be a lot for me if I wasn't also dancing and moving around so much. Beyond that I had the 2 glasses of water and therefore used the restroom plenty. I always plan to leave about 45 min after I get my first urge to go home so I can start focusing on sobering up rather than getting drunk.

here we go by the rule '1 drink an hour' which keeps you under the 0.05% limit for females, and 2 drinks in the first hour and a drink every hour after that, for males. (we actually had a talk from the police at school before we graduated - that IS what they actually said). but i believe it is 0.08% in america?

i have no comment on the tip because it's a bit of a foreign concept for me Smile i tip occasionally for overwhelming service, but it's not expected here. i doubt they would base their judgement on you on the amount of your tips. be sure to go there often and get to know them, that's the best way to make an impression.

    Gamecock,

If you really feel bad, when you go in next time, leave a large tip as well, that way you will have covered for the freebie, and you will definitly make the waiter/waitress happy. But I doubt they notice they hadn't billed you correctly, after a long night, what they will remember is that you were the nice one who gave the good tip.

I do travel and food reviews and have had this happen. When I first started doing reviews I left a $5.00 tip, which I thought would be sufficient; however, I forgot about the glasses of wine that I hadf tasted with each course, so the next time I went back there, I double-tipped. It was an honest mistake. It happens to all of us. I was at my fav casino/hotel- Belterra last week,as I was working in the area, and I forgot to leave the normal $5.00 I leave for my fav waitress. The next night I left an envelope for her with the money inside.
